2 THINGS TO TEACH YOUR KIDS ABOUT THE 9/11 ATTACKS

AMERICAN FLAG

It was about 7:00 AM when my buddy Wade Tilley called and said…

“Sprad, get out of bed, turn on the tv and watch what is going down in New York!”

I was in absolute shock.

It was surreal and felt like I was watching some crazy Hollywood, doomsday, end of the world flick.

It’s hard to believe that today marks the 11 year anniversary of September 11th.  On that Tuesday morning, 19 terrorists, from the Islamist militant group al-Qaeda hijacked 4 passenger jets and flew them into the Twin Towers, The Pentagon and a failed attempt to crash one jet into the United States Capital Building.

Nearly 3,000 people died in the attacks, including the 246 civilians and 19 hijackers aboard the 4 planes.

So many of our kiddos are too young to remember this trajic day, but I think that all parents should take the time to teach their kids about this day that literally changed the way we live life in North America.

HERE ARE 2 THINGS TO TEACH YOUR KIDS ABOUT THE 9/11 ATTACKS…

  • BAD CRAP HAPPENS BUT GOD IS IN CONTROL: We need to take the time to teach our kids that bad crap in life just happens.  People murder.  Parents get divorced.  Bullies bully.  Although bad crap happens, we still have a God that loves and cares for us.  Romans 8:28 says “And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.”  We should teach our kids to STAND on this promise.  I don’t understand why God allows this stuff to happen?  I don’t understand why God didn’t call out the Avengers to open up a can…so when I don’t understand I must STAND and trust the promises of God.
  • BE A HERO & STEP INTO THE FEAR:  Take the time to teach your kiddos about the heroes of 9/11.  The NYPD & NYFD could have ran, backed down and cowered in fear but instead they chose to step into the fear, enter the chaos and save lives.  The passengers on the jet headed for the White House could have fearfully waited for their death but instead they chose to step into the fear, fight, kick and go full on Rambo on the terrorist and bring the plane down.  Teach your kids to to be a hero and step into the pain.

Do you remember where you were when you heard about the 9/11 attacks?  Leave a comment and share your story.

I was in a hospital room, in Shawano, Wisconsin. My son, Joey was born on this day 11 years ago. Today, is his “golden” birthday. He knows what happened on his birthday and sometimes he struggles with all the sadness on what should be a happy day for him. I always emphasize that while it was a sad, tragic day for so many, he brought life and hope and joy to many… I work for The Salvation Army and had many friends who were working at Ground Zero and while they were dealing with sadness, death and tragedy, they remembered that he was born! He is a blessing and we celebrate his life toda and we honor those who lost their lives.

I liked your positive advice. As much for kids as for their grown-ups. 9/11′s impact was and still is, multi-faceted for me. I just blogged my tribute today, Child of Tragedy.
