ColeTrain having some fun last summer…he’s the guy on top!!
- YOU WILL Have Fun: Your kids need to know that fun is a HIGH priority for mom and dad.
- YOU WILL Work: If you have younger kiddos, help them figure out how they will help around the house. If you have older kids, lay down the law and let them know that they WILL work this summer.
- YOU WILL Read: Keep your kids intellectually sharp! Make them read 2 books this summer, the catch is that you get to pick them! Check out this list of GREAT BOOKS.
- YOU WILL Turn Off The Media: The last thing you want is for your kids to be cooped up all summer playing computer games, watching TV and scrolling on Facebook. I really think all parents should lay down the law this summer and place time limits on media and push your kids outside!
- YOU WILL Choose: I encourage all parents to relenquish summer control to your kids. Give them the permission, control and authority to decide how they want to spend their time this summer. Parents should create some boundaries like the ones I mentioned, but give them some freedom to choose this summer. (unless…you don’t trust your kiddos to choose
)

What is 1 more “rule” that you can add to the “rules list”?

We’re going to help local parents accomplish at least 3 of these this summer, as we are going to have a summer camp at a local school. So pumped!!
I would say another rule would be something along the effect of “You will be a team this summer.” With school out, and families spending more hours together, tensions and conflicts tend to arise, especially in the first couple of weeks. It’s just an adjustment that needs to be managed.
That’s really good Joey! Tensions do tend to rise in the summer.
One rule that I’ve started withmy 2 1/2 year old is “No tv when the sun is out”- I just tell him that there are so many other fun things to do! We take our guitars and his drum set and egg shakers outside and have our own concert
or we color or build things, play dough, read books, etc. I hope I’m building good habits young- tv is such a waste of a beautiful day!
Like this one Michelle…tv is a waste for sure, unless the THUNDER are playing!!
You will learn to do one new thing this summer (I.e. sew, cook, do laundry, play an instrument), you get the idea. but let them pick something they are interested in, too.
Good stuff Sabrina. Especially the part about “letting them choose”.
