I was recently asked to review a book written by my friend Julia Espey. The title of the book is If I Were Your Daddy, This Is What You’d Learn. Her book was actually voted “one of the best parenting/family books” of 2011 and I am in the middle of reading the book right now and it’s truly a MUST HAVE for both mom’s and dad’s!
Julia’s book gives you an inside look into the private parenting moments of 35 dads.
You will learn parenting tips from CEOs, sports superstars, Grammy musicians, a Nobel Peace prize winner, and philanthropic leaders (such as Habitat for Humanity CEO, Jonathan Reckford). It’s as if 35 dads were gathered in the “man cave” sharing the good, bad, and the ugly of parenting.
There are hundreds of parenting tips in the book, but here is one of my fav’s from Major Dan Rooney…
“When I’m home, one of the most special moments is when I get the girls up in the morning. Whether you’re a child or an adult, morning is a wonderful time because it’s the beginning of the possibilities of the day. Unlimited possibilities! My daughters and I have a ritual: every morning I ask them the same question, and I won’t leave their rooms until they answer me. I ask, ‘What is today?’ Their sleepy little voices come back, ‘It’s the greatest day of my life!’ I ask, ‘Why?’ And they say, ‘It’s the only one I have.’ In this little ritual, I remind my daughters that each day is theirs to create; in fact, it’s the only day they have. They can make it as they will”
I’m not a very original dad, so I have stolen this from Dan and use this on Team Sprad each morning!
