My Parents Were Geniuses

Thanks to my friend Michelle Clark for posting all week while I took some much needed R & R!  I will see you buys back here Monday morning!  Don’t forget to check out Michelle’s blog HERE.

Remember when you were growing up and you said you’d never ever do to your own children the things your parents did to you? Perhaps it was a vow you made to yourself in the midst of snot and tears as you slammed the door of your room so hard that it nearly shattered the windows? Well, my sixteen-year-old self would probably punch me in the face for doing so, but here’s me admitting to you that I am swallowing my own words. Yep, now that I’m a parent myself, I actually think my parents kind of had some pretty brilliant discipline ideas up their sleeves. (more…)

Do As I Say – Not As I Do!!

I love reading power tag lines!!

For example…

LifeChurch.tv: “Whoever Finds God – Find’s Life”
Scott Williams: “Dream BIG – think BIGGER”
Prolifik Films: “Telling YOUR story to the world”
EpicParent.tv: “Unleashing A New Generation Of Parents”

I know that tag lines can be typically found in churches, brands, and companies.

But I also think that many families have what I would call, “Unwritten Tag Lines”.

And most of them read like this… (more…)

My Parenting Wish List

My cousin Courtney Harless and my mother Vicky Phillips are big fans of author, Lee Pitts.  I have never read much of his stuff, but my mom handed me this short article he wrote about grand parenting and parenting so I had to pass it on to you…

I just pray that I am this kind of a parent… (more…)

EpicParent Goes Retro & Returns To Old Skool Parenting

Since I launched EpicParent I have spent countless hours on the internet consuming all the parenting information I can possibly find.  I love and am amused at all the varying parenting techniques that have been created over the past decade, here are just a few…

  • Helicopter Parenting
  • Growing Kids God’s Way
  • Baby Wise
  • Love & Logic
  • Authoritative Parenting
  • Permissive Parenting
  • Lazy Parenting (I don’t recommend this one)
  • It Takes A Village
  • Be Your Kids Friend Parenting
  • I Will Never Spank Parenting Method
  • I Swear I Will Never Parent Like My Parents Parenting Style

The harsh reality is that their are too many styles, techniques, philosophy and strategies out their to keep up with them all.  So I am thinking that we need to return to OLD SKOOL PARENTING…

  • Where kids actually say “yes sir” and “no sir”
  • Where kids have chores and don’t expect to get paid, it’s just what they do
  • Where kids say “thank you”
  • Where kids don’t talk back because they will get lit on fire (whatever “lit on fire” means to you)
  • Where families actually have dinner together
  • Where dad’s go to their kids games because their family is the priority
  • Where families gather, pray and read God’s Word together
  • Where families gather around the piano and sing Christmas Carols (ok, maybe not this one)
  • Where families actually have family night and the phone is turned off
  • Where mom and dad tuck their kids in at night and pray over their kiddos as they are falling asleep (kids are never too old for this)

What “old skool” methods do you think parents should return to?
