Craig Groeschel On Parenting World Changers

I have had the incredible opportunity of being on staff at Oklahoma City based LifeChurch.tv as a Pastor and Team Teacher.  It was a life changing experience for me.  I had the opportunity to work with incredible leaders, world changers, people that love Jesus more than life and it has impacted me and my family in a profound way.  I am most thankful for the opportunity to work hand in hand with Craig Groeschel, Senior Pastor.  Craig is a great friend, mentor, source of encouragement and I am thankful for the opportunity to learn from him.  I spoke with Craig last week and he said that he would love to post for EpicParent!

Our culture says that successful parents raise well-rounded, well-educated, happy kids. Although those are all admirable and desirable qualities, Jesus asked the piercing question, “What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul?” Matthew 16:26

Even if our children are well-rounded, well-educated and happy into adulthood; if they aren’t spiritually grounded in Christ, we’ve failed as parents.

To me, a better and more biblical goal for parents is this: We are called to unleash single-minded, biblically anchored, world changers.

Well-rounded kids probably play soccer, participate in dance, act in plays, master Algebra 2, can speak a foreign language, and visit the state capital on a field trip. While all these can be valuable experiences and skills, a Christ-focused and single-minded adult will make a bigger difference in eternity.

Because our world is filled with darkness and temptations abound, we must intentionally raise biblically strong children. If we’re counting on one hour a week in church and a bonus hour in youth group to train them to rightly  divide God’s word, they will be eaten alive by professors and friends before their second semester in college.

While we hope our kids are happy, a higher goal would be effectiveness for the Kingdom. Holiness is more important to God than our happiness. When we prayerfully impart spiritual life to our children, they will grow up to be more than well-rounded, well-educated and happy adults. They will be single-minded, biblically anchored, world changers!
