Just Say Yes
“Dad, can we go throw the football?” “Not right now, maybe later”
“Dad, can you teach me how to make an omelet” “Ask your mom, I’m pretty busy”
“Dad, will you play Yahtzee with me” “Let’s play after I watch the football game.”
“Dad, will you come and tuck me in” “Not tonight, I am too tired.”
Does this sound familiar? I am so guilty of the “not right now’s”, “ask your mother” and the “not tonight son, dad is just too tired”! I believe that many parents (me being the chief of all sinners say “no” because we are selfish. Sure there are times when we are exhausted, when “no” is just the right answer, when “me” time is in order or we simply need a Calgon moment. But as a general rule, do you say “no” more than “yes”?
This week EpicParent is focused on speaking life into your kid’s heart, soul and mind. I believe one way to speak life is to…
JUST SAY YES!
JUST SAY YES WHEN YOUR KIDS ASK YOU TO…
- Tuck them in (guilty!)
- Play Yahtzee
- Teach them how to make an omelet
- Stop controlling them
- Throw the football
- Teach them to pump the gas
- Pray with them
- Trust them
- Watch them practice cheer
- Check them out of school for lunch
- Check them out of school to go snowboarding (I get this question almost every day)
- Read to them
- Give them space
- Take them fishing
- Conduct an official interrogation of every boy that asks them out (Yes honey, I will do this if you really want me to)
- Helping them start a business
- Take them to church
- Stop fighting with mom
- Stop fighting with dad
- Stop working so much
- Put the phone down
- Borrow the keys of the car
- Stay up an hour later (what’s it really going to hurt)
- Take them on a special date – or to take them out for MAN TIME
- Say YES when you kids beg you to let them take the trash out
