Play-Doh Heart: The Attack Of Clips, Clicks & Channels
*graph source www.womensday.com/blog
- According to Nielsen Media Research, children aged 2-11 spend more hours in front of the tube than they have since at least 2001. Kids aged 2-5 average more than 32 hours a week in front of a TV. Kids 6-11 spend a little less, about 28 hours per week, presumably because they’re spending more time in school.
- According to research from Family Safe Media, the largest group of viewers of Internet porn is children between ages 12 and 17
- In 2001, a study by social psychologists at the London School of Economics showed that 9 out of 10 children (ages 11 to 16) had viewed pornography on the internet.
Tonight I was hanging in the hot tub with my kids and they shared with me all the stuff they have seen that has hurt their heart….internet images, stupid stuff adults wear (showing boobs and stuff), bad commercials, inappropriate scenes in movies, magazine covers @ the grocery store, Usher’s songs…and the list went on.
If I am honest I am not always intentional about guarding my kids’ heart from this stuff. I have not turned the channel when I wanted to watch a movie, listened to certain songs thinking that it will not sink in, etc…
HOW TO GUARD YOUR KIDS HEART FROM CLIPS, CLICKS & CHANNELS…
- STOP JUSTIFYING: Mom and Dad you have to raise the bar first! It starts with YOU!
- INTERNET FILTER: This is a must, try Safe Eyes.
- IMOM MEDIA MONITOR: Great resource on movies & music…great site for moms.
- KILL YOUR TV: This will change your life I promise…if not, seriously regulate what your kids watch and how much.
- DVR: If you don’t have it, wake up its 2010…lets you control the commercials your kids watch.
- SHAZAM IPHONE APP: Sneaky way to check out what music your kids are listening to.
- SEIZE TEACHABLE MOMENTS: You can’t lock your kids up until they are 30, their hearts will be attacked and when they are…don’t act like it didn’t happen, step into the pain with them, love on them and use it as a teachable moment.
- PROACTIVE CONVERSATION: Be honest and warn them their heart will be attacked…create a safe environment to confess when they mess up.
- DONT BLOW UP: My friends son intentionally looked at some stuff that wrecked his heart…His dad blew up! Give them permission to fail and offer grace and love when they do.

Thanks Chris… for great encouragement on how to parent in a way that is ” NOT OF THIS WORLD”
Thanks for these links – love them. All of this is one reason we watch the Brady Bunch more instead of real t.v.!!! ha ha
I am checking into Safe Eyes! The DVR is our saving grace for TV! For DVD’s, there is a machine you can purchase that automatically filters certain content (language, violence, sex, etc) for the DVD you play. I can not remember the name of the device, but lodstaronline.com promotes it. Their site is under construction right now, however. I will contact Cheryl to see if I can find out what it is called!
Sorry to post again…but I found it! It’s called Clearplay!
We don’t have cable in our home, just Netflix, it’s easy to plan movies to watch as well as its easy to see what’s been watched.
opendns.com rocks for filtering, and it is 100% free!!
If you’re really need some network security, get one of these for home – http://www.sonicwall.com/us/products/TZ_100.html. It can be configured with content filtering as well as an antivirus and malware gateway. (Network security is my job.)
“SHAZAM IPHONE APP: Sneaky way to check out what music your kids are listening to.”
If you have to ‘sneak’ there’s a bigger issue than shazam can fix!
